I have been having a blast working with #IndieBooksBeSeen. It is a great network of self-published authors, and I’ve been having fun being a part of their catalog for 2016. I am so proud to be able to share this catalog at book-signings and provide it for free to my readers. It’s a beautiful catalog with a myriad of book selections.

#IndieBooksBeSeen is a movement that comes with it’s very own holiday that I am pleased to be participating in this year. It’s a day for us indie authors to take over social media, brag about our work, and offer special deals to our readers. Last year #IndiePrideDay was a top trending topic on Twitter. Let’s do it again, shall we?

2016 #indiebooksbeseen Catalog

Indie authors hustle harder.

The market can be challenging for self-published authors. Self-promotion can be a full-time and awkward job. We don’t get the publicity and backing that a publishing house can provide.

Mark Shaw, author of “Keeper of the Wind”, started the #indiebooksbeseen movement on twitter a couple of years ago with the intention of getting indie writers and their overlooked talent the exposure they deserved across social media and beyond. It is a community for indie authors to support one another and promote our work collectively. This year I contributed “Blood & Alcohol” to the 2016 catalog of books. This catalogs ship worldwide, as the #indiebooksbeseen movement and it’s contributors are an international collective of writers. The catalog offers book selections from all genres across the board, with something for all ages.

How can you get a copy of this awesome catalog? They will be available for FREE at all of my upcoming book signings for the rest of the year. Check the Events page for details. They are also included for FREE in ANY purchase you make from my webstore. Or you may contact me directly to request one. You might even spot one at a library or in waiting room if you’re local!

I discovered #indiebooksbeseen from Detroit based indie game developer, Gerald Moore, who is creating the fighting game “Hastings Paradise”.  It’s a fighting-style game featuring jazz legends Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. Yes, I was sold from the beginning! You can follow Moore’s project on twitter @HastingsHR

I’m looking forward to doing more with #indiebooksbeseen, including their “Indie Pride Day” this summer!

Why I’m Not Doing NaNoWriMo Yet Again This Year (But Why You Should)

0

The most common question I get regarding my self-published graphic novella is “how long did it take you?”  That’s kind of an awkward question for me to answer because the book is only 32 pages long.  My reply is “two years”.  If I wanted to, I could even go back and say “four years” because that is when I originally got the idea for the story.  But I didn’t start my heavy writing until NaNoWriMo 2012 and ended up with what is now enough material for a 200+ page novel.  In the span of two years time and a couple of Camp Nanowrimos later, I’ve gone back and forth between keeping The Sick Rose an online graphic series or publishing it as a novel.  Eventually I came to the conclusion to release it in paperback chapter by chapter, or book by book, because the drawings for the first book were already half done in the online graphic version.

If you have been thinking about ever writing a novel, I strongly recommend participating in NaNoWriMo.  Saying that my participating in it two years ago changed my life is a bit of an understatement.  I’m now a self-published author and illustrator.  NaNo taught me that I can be a writer, that really anyone can.  NaNoWriMo separates the “men from the boys” so to speak; but not so much in that it takes some remarkable skill to be able to do it.  It is in the doing it that makes a person a success.  I went in almost blind.  I had done no research, I had no outline or my characters fully figured out.  The story evolved with me and through the process of writing.  Because of it, I am now sitting on enough content to release several more books in paperback.

This is why I will not be participating again this year.  I couldn’t last year because I was still trying to revise and figure out what I was doing with The Sick Rose.  I have to keep my focus on working on Book II of The Sick Rose Vampires “Skin of the Night” because my fans want it.  So I am going to take my NaNoWriMo time and devote it to cranking out drawings, the way it helped me to crank out words.  I’m going to do a drawing a day for the month of November, book related or not, just to get and keep me drawing.  I looked around online and found that people have done this before, but there is nothing officially scheduled for November.  So I will be doing my own DrawMo in a couple days.  I already hopped on the end of #inktober on twitter after having taken a month off from The Sick Rose to promote the book.

You’ll see me and my DrawMo work poking around social media.  I hope everyone participating in NaNoWriMo this year makes it great!  Best wishes!

Character Study: King Arcanum of Numidia

0

The Sick Rose saga actually begins back in ancient North Africa.  I’m getting mixed feedback on whether or not it’s a good idea to make such a leap from a present day setting back to this time period in the novel.  I assure you it is all interrelated, but it does bring the flow of the opening story to an abrupt halt while completely switching gears to new characters.

Again, I am thankful that this is a work of fiction because the time period I’m looking at is about 200 BCE.  It takes place in a territory in North Africa called Numidia which was located along the Mediterranean sea.  Little information is available about Numidian culture due to the amount of war and fallen kingdoms and civilizations at that time.  I’ve read that as the Romans conquered territories, they frequently adopted aspects of the cultures they destroyed which offers me some ideas.  I’m also looking at Greece and Egypt as cultural influences on Numidia.  It was not until later on that Middle Eastern cultures migrated west into North Africa, where modern day Tunisia is located today.

King Arcanum

I didn’t win anything in the drawing contest or even make it to the honorable mentions, but I’m grateful for the fire it lit within me for a spell. I’ve put out some great work over the past week, stuff that has even surprised myself. And that’s what it’s all about to me. Whatever creative pursuit I’m entertaining at the moment, when I make it about anybody else, or worry too much about the finished project, mine or others expectations, or make it a responsibility, I know I’m stuck. Staying present in the creative process, I am free.
